I finally decided to take the plunge and give this a go, and I'm writing a basic guide to go with it as well:

http://www.robotdeathmonkey.com/docs/model_m_guide

Some preview pictures too:

The lettering doesn't show through at all, with the exception of the function key labels I had overlayed. I still need to find a 5.5mm bit for opening the case though, but I love how this is turning out! Thanks for the inspiration Rob Grin

Welcome to the boards InfinityX and thanks for sharing the pics.

Are you planning some kind of labels for the keycaps?

FWIW finding the 5.5mm bit was the hardest part of the whole project.

I love the look of white lettering on black keys (I still have a black Happy Hacker around here somewhere) but unless I can find some to reliably label the keys I'll just leave them blank, it's quite a stunning look overall. I've found the nut driver I'll need at least, just have to wait for it to arrive Undecided

A couple things I considered:
you can get dry transfer letters from hobby stores, but they are getting rare and selection is terrible in general compared to the old days. But dry transfer letters with a clear coat over them would be nice.

There are companies that make self-adhesive key letters such as http://www.keyboard-stickers.com/english.html http://www.fentek-ind.com/keytop-labels.htm http://www.fentek-ind.com/labels.htm (custom!) and others. That kind of takes the fun out of it though.

After what seemed like an eternity of waiting I finally managed to get a hold of the correct size nut driver so I could open the case! The board is finished and I've updated the guide oh yeah

We have quite a few of those sitting in the basement at the bank.  I might go dig one out to try this.
