This project uses only 8 red LEDs but spins them quickly to give the illusion of a large display. A PIC microcontroller handles the timing and LED control. There is a Video of the display on the site.

Very nice! I've been thinking of doing something like that but rotating a plane of LEDs to get a volumetric display.
