Well, that's not really going to be a shocker to anyome. The interesting part is that lack of UL listing/approval is impeding adoption of solid-state lighting in the home. That's very interesting.

wasted power!

It's my opinion that 99% of the lights used in the US, and other industrialized nations is wasted power ... from big 'high end' suburbs where the Jones compete with each other in lighting architecture and landscaping to the used car dealership up the road who had ten new 1000 watt metal halide fixtures installed for all those midnight car shoppers.  Regardless of the technology, the fact the light is even on is the waste - it would still be waste even if it were 100% efficently converting energy in to energy out.

that is interesting to know about inspectors not approving LED light fixtures.  I wonder if the article was written using leading questions or out of context comments ... if i were an inspector, I wouldn't approve some cobbled together permanatly installed line voltage powered light fixture, but I'd think differently about low-voltage or 'temporary' lights like most undercabinet and other decorative lighting fixtures are sold as.

This issue goes deeper then just what was listed here.   i know of a number of companies that fake tags, and or fudge the reports to get an "associated" approval. this all needs to change and fast otherwise im gona freak of inspectors heads... i have butted heads with many municipalities and the battle is just gona get worse.. the biggest issue i have is no electrical code has been given a section for LED lighting... there are fixtures ready its just they cant go to market if UL and ULC are dragging their feet for the little guy and the big boys get an open bar..

Just remember your plumbers name is Fill, Shiret Rolls down Hill, and your sparky has no idea what LED's are.

Hmmmm...It might interest you to know that UL listing is NOT a US law.  UL is ONLY a testing facility with a good racket and a bunch of sleazy marketing ploys.

There is no law that says anything needs to be UL approved, but they have the retailers convinced that they have to.  Consequently you generally do not find anything in stores that is not and to not get UL is commercial suicide.

What the UL does is to charge $5000 to allow you to use their trademark, more if there is actual testing involved.  A more stringent test can be had at numerous testing facilities for CE for less money.

The thing that keeps manufacturers at bay is not the law, but the marketing, and the fact that unless the crooked jerks at UL get what ever it is they want to charge you can't put their trademark on it.
