Automotive headlamp LED

http://www.philipslumileds.com/pdfs/DS66.pdf

850Lm white at 14W mounted to a heatsink with normal hardware and optional fast ons for electrical connection.

It has been boring here lately... what's up with that?

looks pretty neat, and expensive!  you manage to lay hands on one yet?  I imagine the flashlight crazies are already retrofitting their little "tactical" flashlights with these.

not likely.  not many flashlights will hold a 17x17mm light source and few to none have space for 10-15W worth of thermal management plus drive electronics.

Now a boost driver and heat sink might fit in a 6V lantern, but that is not what the crazies want.  They want to show off how much light they can pull out of their pockets.

Flashlights with 9W SSC P7 are quite popular. IMHO the thermal management is not so big issue with aluminum casing but the optics can be - 4 dies in one row means it needs custom reflector or optics.

From the CPF I noticed test report for Luminus Phlatlight SST-90 which was impressive: 2530 lumens @ 11,75 A   Shocked
As you can read, it was maximum he could squeeze out of the PSU , LED would have handled some more raised eyebrow

I wouldn't put it past the flashlighters to take a dremel to the LED's massive heatsink + frame in order to cram it into a smaller form factor.  I can't imagine most of their designs would pass any long-term thermal tests, but for intermittent operation and accepting a rather short service life who cares!
