interesting.
I found a patent application for a "beam shutter in led package". Their term of shutter is something I'd think of as a baffle but oh well - it works to define the emission from the led to a specific pattern, by blocking some of the light emitted from the die before the light reaches the lens of the package
as inefficient and impotent as LEDs are, you'd think a computer designed polymer optic would be a better choice; collecting and squeezing the light into a desired beam path, rather than simply blocking off part of the light so much energy was expended to generate.

So for the 5 LED version, are they all in parallel? Would 12VDC drive them if they are in series?

I am not sure. That is a press release and does not give the graphs or the connections. I suspect it is only that bright until it heats up.
