There is a new bulb hitting the market:  RF excited plasma.   The bulb itself is about the size of a T1 3/4 and the bulb with the electronics is about the size of a fist.

I called them the other day and he said that the new version ( the old one is currently in use in specialty apps like projection tvs) is due in distribution in June.  90W @ 140Lm/W 50K life 95 CRI and $650.  I said I would think that in a year or so ( once production is going full bore ) it would drop to around $400 and he agreed.

I asked about other spectrums and he said there are ones for plants, medical, and street lights among others.
