I built a bird feeder years ago that I recently put back up with a couple refinements to hold it. The base is about 8"x12"x1" deep made from untreated 1/2"x1" hardwood w/2" wide supports running up from each end with gentle angles cut on top to accomodate a sheet of heavy copper folded down over the ends. Well, the chicadees, cardinals, sparrows, all the "little" birdies love it. I mounted it onto a steel bar I drove into the ground so the feeder is about 5 ft. above ground. Land-based critters can't get into it. I installed a lid from a wok onto the 1" bar halfway up it. It's about 14" dia & shaped like a dome. heh, heh, heh

And then a big morning dove landed on top the roof of it & stayed there for about 15-20 mins. (morning/mourning?) and it dawned on me that the poor critter couldn't get into the feeder. And it sat sat patiently on the roof of it for what seemed eternity before it flew away. It's COLD here (10F) last night & a couple inches of snow. Any way to appease the doves without inviting bluejays or any other larger and/or more aggessive birds?
