I've made a few boxes for Christmas gifts. Here's some of them:

This one was for my wife, it's made from bloodwood and was cut on the bandsaw then shaped to final profile by hand.

This walnut box was a gift for my neighbor:

and I buzzed out a couple more walnut boxes yet to be gifted:

The third one in the pic is a little misaligned, so it is going to be scrapped. Don't rush when you're gluing up, kids!

I'm a learner, and a long way from mastery at this wood stuff. A few more expensive tools might help me along though, lol!

This should help illustrate the method on the walnut boxes.

They are made on the router table, mostly by cutting four 3/8" slots in a long, 3/8" thick board. The offcut here shows the four slots. They are:
1 rabbet for top
2 rabbet for bottom
3 inside lid lip
4 box lip
You slot your stock, then cut 2 sides and two ends. Rabbet the ends (same router setup), then dry fit and cut a top and bottom to fit the opening. Glue up the box with all six sides, and rip off the lid by cutting where I have the red line. Slots 3 and 4 should be about a kerf width apart.
