 Grin

wire the coil to the supply
wire the contacts to the load

wonder if that will work in reverse?

To add more confusion raised eyebrow  Grin some relays don't have coils (solid state relays - SSR).

A good read can be found here.
http://64.233.161.104/search?q=cache:1pTtvwCKL30J:synergy.sager.com/ProductPDFs/relays.pdf+what+is+a+relay&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=1

The coil requires power, when the rated voltage and current are applied, the coil works as an electromagnet, pulls in an armature, the armature moves the contact(s) from open to close or vise vs.

You will need to know what your supply (coil) and load (contact) voltage and current are and the number of cycles of required operation to select the proper relay for the application.

lol

ask a vague question, get a vague response  Huh

if the OP would kindly provide some more informations as to his application, including what type of relay, I'm sure we can get some good answers flowing.
